    • Introduction of Dr. David Rose

Janice Neden introduces David Rose.  Dr. Rose explains this chain of events that led up to his high-fiving of Canadian Idol Mitch.

    • What Do We Mean by Universal?

Dr. Rose introduces the idea that innovations often arise from diversity in the margins.  He discusses diversity in students with Williams and Downs Syndrome.  He also shows the great diversity in the way students in his classes at Harvard take notes.

    • What Do We Mean by Learning?

Dr. Rose discusses the latest brain research which uses fMRI techniques to observe the brain during learning.  He discusses the idea that learning is not one thing.  Dr. Rose discusses three main categories of learning and their associated brain networks:  recognition, strategic, and affective.  He then shows how UDL uses multiple means of representation, expression, and engagement to support these three brain networks.

    • What Do We Mean by Design?

Dr. Rose shows some examples of building and technology design by discussing Universal Design features in architecture, fitness gyms, and the Hertz Neverlost navigation system.  He then discusses Universal Design in curriculum materials, showing examples from the Thinking Reader series.

    • Why Curriculum is Disabled

Dr. Rose concludes the presentation with the observation that it is often the curriculum rather than the student that is disabled.

    • Q and A Session

Dr. Rose answers questions from participants in the remote broadcast as well as members of the live audience.  Janice Neden provides concluding remarks.
